The importation of slaves into the United States was banned by the Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves January 1, 1808.
This was the earliest amendment under the United States Constitution restricting slavery.
Peter Williams, Jr., celebrated the occasion with “An Oration on the Abolition of the Slave Trade“.
